Why should a small breed dog have a specific recipe?31 July 2020 | Admin Smaller Breed Dogs have a faster metabolic rate to Larger Breeds – Our dedicated kibble has a higher calorie content that is nutrient-dense. Small breeds have a faster metabolic rate than large breeds which is linked to them having a greater ratio of body surface area to body weight. This means that they have much higher energy requirements per kilogram of body weight and therefore they need a food with a higher calorie content that is nutrient-dense. Anatomically, small breeds also have smaller stomachs, so they aren’t able to consume large meals. Due to this, it’s important to feed a small breed diet that has been specifically designed to support their nutritional requirements so that they are able to gain everything they need in a smaller portion. Our Grain Free Small Breed recipes have been formulated with a higher level of crude protein and crude fat compared to our standard adult recipes. This helps to provide a higher calorie content to support elevated energy requirements of small breeds. These recipes also contain high quality and highly digestible freshly prepared proteins. High digestibility is especially important for small breeds to ensure ease of digestion on their small tummies. And of course, all recipes have a smaller kibble size help to keep small mouths happy!
